Your Brain Has a Secret Drain. Aging Is Slowly Closing It.
There are tiny holes in a bone at the base of your skull, microscopic gaps no wider than a strand of spider silk, and your brain depends on them to stay clean. Scientists just found them, mapped exactly how they work, and then figured out how to reopen them.
The bone is the cribriform plate, which separates your brain from your nasal cavity. Researchers already knew that cerebrospinal fluid, the liquid that bathes your brain and carries away toxic waste like amyloid-beta and tau, the proteins implicated in Alzheimer's, drains somewhere toward the neck. But the precise plumbing was genuinely unknown. Where, exactly, does the fluid leave the brain?
The answer lives in a specialized lymphatic network located between the olfactory bulbs and the cribriform plate. The overlying membrane, called the arachnoid, contains numerous microscopic openings measuring approximately 2 to 12 micrometers in diameter. Cerebrospinal fluid slips through these openings, enters a web of lymph vessels, passes through the cribriform plate and drains to lymph nodes in the neck. Brain waste, out through the nose. Sort of.
Here's where it gets worse and then better: in aged mice, the size and number of these openings were reduced by 50 to 60 percent compared to young mice, and the surrounding lymphatic vessels shrank alongside them. The brain's drain, slowly closing with age.
The better part: researchers showed that intranasal administration of a VEGF-C viral vector, delivered through the nose rather than the skull, fully restored fluid clearance in aged mice.
The holes didn't reopen. The lymphatic network around them grew back anyway, and the drain ran clear again.

Hot Take: The brain has been quietly routing its trash through the nose this whole time, and the owner's manual is only showing up now. The part where aging progressively seals the exits, and a nasal spray concept might unseal them, is either very reassuring or deeply inconvenient depending on how old you are.
