The Song Stuck in Your Head Leaves a Readable Trace in Your Brain

Ten people imagined familiar melodies without making a sound. What their neural activity revealed was detailed enough for researchers to reconstruct the actual notes.

You know that moment when a song gets stuck in your head and plays on a loop you didn't authorize? Researchers have now found that the melody leaves a readable pattern in the brain.

A new neuroscience study demonstrates that imagined musical melodies can be decoded and reconstructed from brain activity. Not the song someone is listening to. The one playing silently in their head.

The researchers studied 10 epilepsy patients who already had intracranial electrodes implanted for clinical monitoring. Each participant heard the opening notes of a well-known children's tune, held the rest of it in their head, and then hummed the ending out loud.

The question wasn't simply whether the researchers could tell that someone was imagining music. They wanted to know whether the brain signals contained enough information to reconstruct which notes the person was hearing internally.

They did.

The decoding model focused on relative pitch relationships (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la) rather than absolute frequencies. By combining those note predictions across time, researchers could reconstruct the melodic contours of the imagined songs.

That matters for more than finding out what's stuck in someone's head. The work is a proof of concept for brain-computer interfaces that could eventually turn internally imagined sound into something audible, including speech for people who have lost the ability to speak because of conditions such as ALS.

For now, the decoder can only extract a simple do-re-mi melody from raw brain activity. Which is already plenty weird enough.
