The First Moon Found Outside Our Solar System Is Technically Not a Moon
A gas giant the size of Jupiter is orbiting a brown dwarf roughly 72 light-years away, and astronomers spent months staring at the system before admitting they weren't sure what to call what they found.
The object does not orbit a planet. It orbits a brown dwarf, a body too massive to count as a planet but not massive enough to ignite as a star, and that brown dwarf in turn orbits an actual star called CD-35 2722. A star, circled by something too big to be a planet, circled by something too big to be an ordinary moon. Lead researcher Kevin Hoy, an ESO student in Chile, called the setup "super weird" compared to our own solar system.
The brown dwarf carries more than 30 times the mass of Jupiter. The newly spotted object circling it weighs in at Jupiter's mass or more. A planet-sized body orbiting a star-sized failure orbiting a half-strength sun. None of the usual categories quite fit.
Researchers pointed the CRIRES+ instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope at the system and applied the radial-velocity trick that clinched the first exoplanet find around a Sun-like star decades ago, watching for the faint wobble the object induces in its larger neighbor. They say the signal holds up. That distinction matters: astronomers have catalogued more than 6,000 exoplanets and still have not confirmed a single exomoon.
This candidate is the strongest one yet, and it breaks the naming system on the way in. Because the object skips the planet step entirely, there is no clean line here between star, brown dwarf and moon, and the team calls it an exosatellite instead.
The universe apparently built this kind of system a long time ago. We only just got a telescope precise enough to notice it.
