The Big Bang Wrote the Rules. The Big Ring Ignored Them.
Astronomers have identified an assembly of galaxies and galaxy clusters that forms a nearly perfect circle, stretching about 1.3 billion light-years across. They're calling it the Big Ring.
The cosmological principle holds that the universe should look roughly uniform at large enough scales, since physical laws act on all matter equally. That principle sets a rough ceiling, around 1.2 billion light-years, on how big any single structure is expected to get.
Up close, it's a corkscrew 9.2 billion light-years away, angled so precisely toward Earth that it reads as a circle from here. Researchers spotted it using quasars, the blazing cores of distant galaxies powered by supermassive black holes, as a kind of backlight that revealed the fainter galaxies making up the shape. If you could see the Big Ring in our night sky, it would appear to span an area of the sky about 15 full moons wide.
Alexia Lopez, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Central Lancashire, led the team that found it. No known process in galaxy formation explains how something this size could form and hold its shape.
Physics has a strict size limit on guests in the universe. The Big Ring crashed the party anyway.
