Every Egg You'll Ever Have. Except Maybe That's Wrong.
You were told, at some point, that girls are born with all the eggs they'll ever have, a fixed supply, no refills, no exceptions. It's one of those biology facts that feels settled. Textbook stuff.
That settled feeling is starting to wobble. Researchers have spent the last twenty years poking around inside adult ovaries, in species ranging from mice to cows to humans, and keep finding cells that seem able to spin up brand new immature eggs under the right conditions.
These are called ovarian stem cells. Nobody's certain yet whether these cells can go the distance and produce an egg that actually works, but the debate they've kicked off is real, and it's raising the possibility that ovarian aging is more flexible, maybe even partly reversible, than the textbooks assumed.
The idea being challenged dates back to the 1950s. Some researchers still treat it as settled and dismiss the newer findings outright. But the scientists pushing back are credentialed, and the evidence keeps accumulating. Reproductive biologist Evelyn Telfer at the University of Edinburgh has become convinced these cells can develop into egg-like structures. Biologist Jonathan Tilly at Northeastern has spent more than 20 years making the same case, absorbing plenty of institutional skepticism along the way.
Whether these cells can ever produce a functional egg is still an open question. Reproductive biology has been treating a 1950s assumption as bedrock for 70 years, and bedrock is exactly what's now in question.
