A Poop Transplant Gave Old Mice Their Young Brains Back

Lazy eye treatment only works on brains still able to rewire themselves. So how did a gut microbiome switch that ability back on in animals long past it?

Old mice that received fecal transplants from young donors didn't just get healthier guts. They got more plastic brains, regaining the ability to form new neural connections that had gone quiet with age.

The test case was amblyopia, better known as lazy eye. In children, covering the dominant eye for a few weeks forces the brain to rewire itself and strengthen the weaker one. It works because young brains are still highly malleable, a quality called neuroplasticity. In adults and older mice, that window of flexibility has largely closed. The brain stops taking new bookings.

Transplanting feces from young mice into old mice restored the ability of their brains to form new connections. The old mice, post-transplant, responded to the patched-eye treatment the way young mice do. The neuroplastic window, the one that was supposed to be shut, reopened.

The gap between mice and humans remains considerable, and researchers have yet to identify precisely which bacteria are responsible for this effect, or by what mechanism they act on the brain. Call it an early and genuinely strange finding, years away from anything usable in a clinic.

What makes it stranger: the gut-to-brain pipeline runs in reverse too. Microbes from aged mice induced inflammation in the brains of young recipients. The old microbiome aged the young brain. The young microbiome de-aged the old one. Whatever is happening in the gut, it is talking to the brain, and the brain is listening.

One transplant made an old brain act young. The reverse made a young brain act old. Whatever is steering a mouse's mind, it may be living in its gut.
