This Microbe Grows Its Young Inside Itself. Then It Explodes.

A newly discovered microbe doesn't split in two like ordinary cells. It grows its young inside itself, then bursts open to release them, and what's happening inside before that happens is stranger than it sounds.

A single-celled organism discovered in Scottish waters doesn't divide the way cells are supposed to. Rather than splitting into two identical copies, it packs one or more offspring inside its own body, then the parent cell splits open to set them free, a method never documented before in this group of organisms.

That's the headline. Here's the part that makes you sit down: the mature cell develops a large internal chamber where entirely new daughter cells grow, and some of those daughters already have another generation developing inside them before the mother cell breaks open. Pregnant grandmothers. Generations nested inside generations, all waiting for the walls to come down.

The new species belongs to a little-known group of marine microorganisms called Labyrinthulomycetes, ocean-floor decomposers that recycle dead plant and animal matter in seawater and other salty habitats. A team spanning Heriot-Watt University, its spinout company Strameno, the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, and the Institute of Aquaculture at Stirling University published the findings in the journal Protist.

It was electron microscope footage that revealed what was happening. Dr. Jane Polglase, who has studied this group of organisms for nearly 50 years, said the team would never have caught this peculiar reproductive process on camera without that close, old-fashioned style of observation. The thing she'd been watching the whole time had been holding out on her.

The species name Caledochytrium aldermaii honors two things: Scotland (Caledonia in Latin), where it turned up three separate times, and Dr. David Alderman of CEFAS, whose early lab work kept the first cultures alive long enough to study.

Nobody names the lab that lets the unremarkable things die. The name is the least it deserves.
