This Bird's Sexy Dance Began as a Fruit Craving

The most dazzling courtship displays in the bird world may trace back not to sexual pressure, but to a gut enzyme these birds quietly stopped using. What came first changed everything.

Deep in Central and South American rainforests, male manakins turn tiny patches of forest floor into stages. They clear the ground themselves, then spend enormous chunks of their lives snapping their wings like firecrackers, launching into backflips and running synchronized routines with other males, all of it aimed at winning over a female. The dancing has always looked like the story. Turns out it's the punchline.

Researchers built a family tree of more than 1,300 related bird species and traced when different genetic changes showed up along it. The order was clear: the diet changed first, way back in the manakins' ancestry, and the elaborate mating system and its showy displays only showed up much later. The dancing didn't make the manakin. The fruit did.

Here's how the chain works. Manakins re-evolved the ability to taste sweetness, gaining sugar sensing independently the same way hummingbirds, songbirds and woodpeckers each separately did, just through a different molecular route. Then digestion got weird. Lactase, the enzyme mammals use to break down milk sugar, has lost much of its activity in manakins. That enzyme normally also breaks down certain plant compounds in unripe fruit, compounds that otherwise block sugar absorption. With less active lactase, manakins seem to pass those compounds through harmlessly and pull more energy out of the fruit instead. A bird that lost the ability to digest one thing got dramatically better at extracting energy from another, an odd inheritance in a species that has never once needed to digest milk.

Performing these energetically costly displays takes real fuel. Year-round tropical fruit, efficiently metabolized, funded millions of years of increasingly elaborate choreography.

What remains open: exactly how the dietary shift cascaded into sexual selection pressure, and whether similar gut-to-behavior pathways are hiding in other lineages.

The manakins were dancing for fruit long before they were dancing for each other. They just didn't know it yet.
