The Supernovae Were Wrong. Whether the Universe Noticed Is Still Unclear.
The evidence that the universe is accelerating outward, the Nobel Prize-winning discovery that introduced dark energy to the world, was built on exploding stars. Specifically, on the assumption that a certain class of exploding star, called a Type Ia supernova, always detonates at the same intrinsic brightness. Standard candles, cosmologists call them. The whole model depends on that.
They are not the same brightness.
Older white dwarf stars, the ones that have been sitting around longer before exploding, produce systematically dimmer supernovae than younger ones. Researchers at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and the University of Oxford applied age-dependent corrections to the largest supernova dataset currently in use, called Pantheon+, and found something startling: once you account for the age of each stellar progenitor, the evidence for uniform cosmic acceleration disappears.
What remains is a universe that appears to be decelerating. Not expanding faster. Slower.
That means dark energy, the invisible force cosmologists believe makes up roughly 70% of everything in existence, may be an artifact of an uncorrected calibration bias sitting in the data since the late 1990s. The researchers also found that the apparent acceleration is not evenly distributed across the sky; it clusters in one direction, which a truly uniform dark energy field should not do.
The standard cosmological model, called Lambda-CDM, assumes the universe looks the same in every direction. The corrected data suggests it does not.
The debate is live. Other researchers contest the progenitor-age correction. Nobody has the final answer yet.
