The Same Molecule in Your Raspberry Jam Turned Up Near the Center of the Galaxy

The same sugar molecule in raspberries just turned up near the galactic center, in quantities nobody expected. What that means for life on Earth is still wide open.

A sugar molecule, the kind found in raspberries and, somewhat less poetically, in self-tanning lotion, has been detected drifting through a cloud of interstellar gas near the center of the Milky Way. Astronomers are calling it the first true sugar spotted in interstellar space.

The molecule is erythrulose, the only possible four-carbon ketose sugar, which on Earth turns up in red fruits and sunless tanning products. Its presence in space isn't just a curiosity. Sugars form the backbone of DNA and RNA and are essential to how living things process energy. In theories about the origin of life, they're a necessary ingredient for building the first nucleic acids.

The long-standing problem is this: lab experiments show sugars don't form in large enough quantities under the conditions Earth had early on. So where did they come from? Erythrulose turned up 8 to 17 times more abundant in this cloud than the simpler three-carbon sugars scientists expected to find, and those simpler sugars weren't detected at all. Chemical modeling shows erythrulose can form efficiently on interstellar dust grains from simpler carbon compounds, supporting the idea that the sugar ingredients for life may have started out in space.

Outside researchers say the find backs up the broader idea that our solar system may have arrived already seeded with organic building blocks, not empty and waiting for chemistry to happen from scratch.

The ingredients being out there is no longer the mystery. How they made the trip from a molecular cloud near the galactic core to the surface of a young, wet planet on our unremarkable spiral arm, that part's still missing a chapter.
