The North Sea Crater That Lost the Vote
Seven hundred meters below the North Sea seabed, about 80 miles off the Yorkshire coast, there is a 3-kilometer-wide crater ringed by concentric faults stretching 20 kilometers across. Geologists found it in 2002. Then they spent two decades arguing about what made it.
One camp said it was a fast-moving space rock. A second pointed to buried salt layers rising and buckling the rock above. A third blamed a collapsed gas chimney. In 2009, they literally put it to a vote. The majority voted against the asteroid. The majority was wrong.
Here is what actually happened: a 160-meter-wide (525-foot-wide) asteroid hit the seabed at a low angle from the west, and within minutes created a 1.5-kilometer-high curtain of rock and water that collapsed into the sea, generating a tsunami over 100 meters (330 feet) high.
The proof was hiding in a cardboard box. Samples from a nearby oil well revealed rare "shocked" quartz and feldspar crystals at the same depth as the crater floor, a needle-in-a-haystack find that proves the impact hypothesis beyond doubt, because they have a fabric that can only be created by extreme shock pressures. Normal geology cannot produce them. An asteroid can.
Silverpit is a rare and exceptionally preserved hypervelocity impact crater, rare because Earth's plate tectonics and erosion destroy almost all traces of most of these events. Confirmed impact structures are rare to begin with, something like 200 known on land, and far rarer underwater, where researchers have found only about three dozen. Silverpit joins that very short list.
The vote was 23 years ago. The rock was right the whole time.
