Star Breaking Death's Speed Limit

A binary star with a 72-minute orbit shouldn't exist. Our best models say so. What does it mean that we've now found ten?

Two stars are circling each other every 72 minutes. Physics textbooks say they absolutely cannot do this.

Astronomers have long held that dwarf novae (binary systems where a dead stellar core feeds on a living companion) cannot orbit each other faster than about 76 minutes. At separations that tight, the frameworks astronomers use to model stellar aging stop producing coherent predictions. The limit is called the period minimum, and it has held up reliably for decades.

A team at the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute just found a pair that skipped that memo. Sang Chul Kim's team identified a dwarf nova: a configuration where a white dwarf siphons material from a companion that has not yet exhausted its fuel. The captured material collects in a luminous accretion disk, periodically flaring bright enough to register from Earth.

Before this, confirmed sub-minimum systems numbered nine across all of recorded astronomy. That brings the confirmed count to ten; two of those were KASI discoveries, including one from 2022.

The companion star is almost certainly unusual. Its apparent youth may be misleading: the star could be deep into its lifespan, approaching its own end. Elevated helium content, a deficit of heavier elements, or an unusually compact core are all candidates. Each points to a distinct end-of-life trajectory that stellar evolution models haven't yet traced.

The result, published in The Astronomical Journal, is more than a single oddity. Each confirmed exception weakens the case that we have a reliable picture of how the universe's most abundant stars age out.

The team now plans to hunt down more of these rule breakers, trying to identify whatever mechanism permits a stellar remnant to maintain such a compressed orbit.

Ten systems in. Still no answer for how dwarf novae are breaking the period minimum.
