Something in the Milky Way Is Outmuscling the World's Biggest Particle Accelerator

It's outperforming the Large Hadron Collider by a factor of 100. Researchers confirmed what it does. They still can't tell you what it is.

Somewhere in the constellation Aquila, not far from Altair, one of the three stars forming the Summer Triangle, visible on any clear summer night, something is flinging protons through space at one quadrillion electron volts. It has been doing this for some time. Nobody can explain it.

Cosmic rays are charged particles, mostly protons, that race through the galaxy at extraordinary energies. Some carry more energy than anything produced by the Large Hadron Collider, the most powerful particle accelerator on Earth, which spans 27 kilometers under the Swiss-French border and pushes protons to within a hair of the speed of light. For a natural object to exceed that threshold, physicists have a name: a PeVatron, a source capable of accelerating particles beyond one petaelectronvolt.

LHAASO J1912+1014u was catalogued in 2024 and initially classed as a supernova remnant. Then researchers detected emissions above 100 TeV, which forced a reclassification and elevated it to PeVatron candidacy. Now the confirmation has arrived: the source is accelerating protons to record-breaking energies. What it actually is remains unresolved. A pulsar wind nebula, perhaps. Debris from a massive stellar explosion, possibly. Researchers have proposals. They do not have an answer.

The object in Aquila has a catalog number and a proton output past one petaelectronvolt. It still doesn't have an identity.
