Life-Ready Shapes Are Folding Inside Venus's Acid Clouds

The building blocks of life just survived weeks in near-pure sulfuric acid, and folded into functional shapes. Venus's clouds may have been hiding something.

Venus's clouds are roughly 98 percent sulfuric acid, conditions scientists had long assumed were too corrosive for complex biological molecules to survive. That was a reasonable assumption. It was also wrong.

A new MIT study found that short peptides — the molecular units that build proteins — hold together in that highly acidic environment and take on folded shapes that could give them biological function. These aren't inert chunks of matter drifting through acid. They're doing something. The structures they form, called omega loops, are associated with protein folding and molecular recognition in naturally occurring proteins. Whether they could serve other biological functions remains unknown.

Peptide fragments hitch rides on meteorites that regularly fall into Venus's atmosphere. Whether that material could ever contribute to something alive always hinged on one unanswered question: could it survive first contact with the clouds. The new research suggests the answer is yes. Short peptides stayed intact for weeks in 98 percent sulfuric acid and folded into defined omega-loop structures.

The altitude helps. Venus's cloud layer sits at temperatures far more earthlike than the planet's scorching surface, and the droplets contain trace amounts of water.

Sara Seager, who leads the Morning Star Missions to Venus, points out that life depends on proteins folded into specific shapes that can latch onto a target and carry out a function. Until now, the assumption was that peptides couldn't survive sulfuric acid at all, which makes evidence that they not only survive but fold correctly a genuinely big deal.

This doesn't prove anything is alive up there. It proves the door wasn't as closed as everyone thought.
