Humpback Whale Songs Are a Dive Chart

A 40-ton animal has spent 16 hours performing the same routine, and it lines up with his body's position in the water almost to the second. What does it mean when the music and the movement turn out to be the same thing?

A 40-ton whale has been running through the same playlist for 16 hours straight, and it turns out every track is cued to exactly where in the water column his body is. Not approximately. Exactly.

Researchers found that humpback whales repeat their songs continuously for up to 16 hours, and the repeating elements, called themes, are tied to specific parts of a dive cycle. Ascent and descent themes are consistent across individuals and across years. Same whale, different ocean, different decade: same song, same depth, same section. That's not improvisation. That's a score.

Despite decades of research into what these songs sound like, scientists had far less insight into what the whales are physically doing while they sing, a gap that matters because singing affects a whale's energy use, oxygen management and vulnerability to underwater noise and vessel strikes.

To close that gap, researchers temporarily attached sound-and-movement recording tags to singing humpbacks off the coast of Maui over a research effort spanning 2018 to 2024. The non-invasive tags are small suction-cup devices about the size of a tablet, attached from small boats using long poles and, more recently, drones.

What they found: at the bottom of a dive, where depth is stable, a greater variety of theme types emerges, and that variation is more likely driven by sexual selection, as males compete to stand out when their bodies aren't managing major pressure changes. The physics loosens up. The showboating begins.

Whether the same patterns hold for humpback populations outside Hawaii remains an open question. Differences in song evolution between hemispheres raise the possibility that different populations experience different pressures on song structure.

The song isn't just communication. It's a physiological log, depth, pressure, oxygen, all encoded in music scientists are only now learning to read.
