Greek Elites Wore Extraterrestrial Rings

Somewhere in a Bronze Age tomb in southern Greece, a Mycenaean noble went into the ground wearing a signet ring forged from iron that had fallen from space.

Researchers tested 91 ancient iron weapons and pieces of jewelry and found elevated nickel levels in roughly a dozen signet rings — a chemical fingerprint pointing to meteoritic origin, according to a study published in the August 2026 Journal of Archaeological Science. Nickel is the tell: it's common in meteorites but rare in iron made through smelting. Of the objects tested, weapons came up clean. Rings did not. All 13 nickel-bearing objects were rings or fragments of rings.

The researchers used X-ray fluorescence to read each object's chemical fingerprint. Of those 13 nickel-bearing rings, they concluded 10 were probably forged from meteoric iron, with three needing further study. Prehistoric archaeologist Eleni Mantzourani of the University of Athens says the pattern shows meteoritic iron was treated as a valuable material reserved for a high-status group, likely elite Mycenaeans and Minoans.

This wasn't uniquely Greek. A dagger made from meteorite iron was found in King Tut's tomb. What's notable here is where Greece sourced its sky metal. Because meteorites are relatively rare along Greece's coast, where the sea swallows most of them, the researchers believe the raw material may have been imported from Egypt, where arid deserts preserve meteorites more often. Apparently, ancient trade between the two regions moved more than grain, oil and bronze.

Meteoritic iron rings disappear from the archaeological record after the 12th century BC. That timing coincides with the Late Bronze Age collapse, which brought an end to the Mycenaean civilization in southern Greece. The fashion didn't fade. It ended.
