Daddy Longlegs Are Eating Frogs Whole
In the cloud forests of Ecuador and Colombia a harvestman, the spindly, eight-legged arachnid you've been calling "daddy longlegs" your whole life, catches a live frog larger than itself, pins it down using nothing but its legs, and eats it. No venom. No web. Just legs and audacity.
The paper, published in Ecology and Evolution, drew on 10 documented cases across South America of harvestmen taking down frogs close to their own size. The cases come from Ecuador, Colombia and other sites in the region. In several cases, the frogs were still alive, suggesting these arachnids may not simply be scavengers. They may also be active hunters.
A few things make this genuinely strange. Harvestmen (order Opiliones) are not technically spiders; they belong to the arachnid class alongside spiders but are more closely related to scorpions. They have no venom glands at all. Researchers flagged the subduing mechanism as the central puzzle: harvestmen carry no venom to chemically immobilize prey, yet they're pulling it off anyway. The hunters have only physical restraint as a means to subdue the frogs. In some documented cases, the frog was up to 1.29 times the harvestman's own body size.
The observation complicates how tropical food webs are understood. Arthropods are often treated as prey for vertebrates, not the other way around. These findings suggest the picture is more complicated, particularly in tropical forests where harvestmen can be larger and more robust. Some species have strong, spiny mouthparts well suited for catching and holding onto slippery frogs. The behavior is probably more widespread than current records show.
