Clams Are Pretty Good Parents
An ancient freshwater clam spent her last days doing something like packing her kids' lunches. She loaded her babies with calcium, kept them tucked safe in her own gills until they were ready, then sent them off on their first day out, to hitch a ride on a fish.
The fossil, 125 million years old, turned up on the Isle of Wight, a stretch of English coastline that keeps eroding new prehistoric material into view. Inside the shell were microscopic embryos and larvae, preserved in gill tissue that normally rots away fast. It is now the oldest confirmed case of a shellfish caring for its young.
This species, Margaritifera valdensis, is a relative of today's freshwater pearl mussel, and modern pearl mussels still run the same playbook. Larvae grow inside mom's gills, get released into open water, then latch onto a passing fish as parasites for a stretch before dropping off and starting an independent life on the riverbed.
Scientists also cleared up an old mystery while they were at it. A dark material found in similar fossils, named molluskite over a century ago, turns out to be fossilized reproductive tissue rather than whatever anyone originally guessed.
A newborn mussel's first move is hitching a ride. The fish had no idea it signed up as a daycare.
