Bacteria Have a Union Now
Some of the bacteria surviving your antibiotic course aren't just tough. They're organized.
Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine discovered that bacterial populations work as a team when antibiotics hit, pooling resources to keep dormant cells alive. The study was published in Science on June 25, 2026, and what it describes is considerably more coordinated than anyone expected.
These survivors aren't genetically resistant. Rather than carrying resistance genes, these cells put themselves into a kind of metabolic standby, conserving just enough function to outlast the treatment and reactivate afterward. That part was known. What wasn't: antibiotics cause a genetically identical group of bacteria to split into two distinct groups. Donor cells respond by releasing protein-filled vesicles, and recipient cells go dormant but take up proteins from those incoming vesicles, which helps them survive.
The researchers engineered donor bacteria to produce a special enzyme called Cre, and recipient bacteria to contain a genetic switch that could only flip if that enzyme entered them. Under normal conditions, protein transfer between bacteria was rare. When exposed to low, non-lethal antibiotic levels, transfer increased by thousands of times.
Researchers now hope to identify inhibitors that block this protein-sharing mechanism entirely. If successful, that could make persistent infections significantly more susceptible to existing antibiotics. The drugs we already have, made more effective by cutting off bacterial mutual aid.
The antibiotics weren't failing. They just didn't know about the solidarity network that bacteria have been running.
