Alien Life Hasn't Made Contact. It Already Has a Room Booked on the Moon.
Before extraterrestrial life has been confirmed, scientists are already designing where to put it.
A peer-reviewed study in Ambio from May 2026 argues that before any sample from Mars, an asteroid, or an icy moon reaches Earth, it should stop on the Moon first. Not as a waypoint. As a biocontainment facility. The authors are Frederick Moxley, a former Pentagon adviser and biodefense specialist, and Anthony Ricciardi, an invasive-species expert at McGill University.
Their concern is specific: no facility on Earth can guarantee absolute containment of an organism we have never encountered and cannot predict. So they want to build the containment off-world, staffed entirely by robots, before any sample gets close to Earth's biosphere.
The framework they reach for is invasion biology. An extraterrestrial organism introduced to Earth, they argue, could behave like an invasive species: spreading into novel environments, outcompeting native life, adapting faster than we can respond. They point to microbial organisms already documented rapidly evolving to survive extreme conditions here, which quietly dismantles the assumption that anything evolved off-world simply could not make it on ours.
With Artemis already underway and NASA targeting 2028 for the Artemis 4 crewed lunar landing, the infrastructure is coming regardless. The authors' argument is that the biocontainment layer needs to be designed into it now. Not debated after the first sample return. Not retrofitted.
The organism driving all of this has not been found. It may not exist. The scientists are arguing that neither of those facts is the point.
