A Killer Whale With a Knife Hidden in The Peruvian Desert
A 72-foot killer whale holding a knife has been sitting in the Peruvian desert for 2,000 years.
It took nearly a century to discover a total of 430 figurative Nazca geoglyphs, which are massive ground drawings scraped into the desert floor by the pre-Inca Nazca culture. Then a team from Japan's Yamagata University and IBM pointed an AI at the same landscape. In six months of field survey, the system led to the discovery of 303 new figurative geoglyphs, nearly doubling the known count. By mid-2025, the confirmed total had climbed to 893, with 781 identified through this AI-human partnership.
The method matters. The model flagged 1,309 candidate locations; humans had to walk every one. That fieldwork confirmed 303 figurative sites, distinguishing genuine Nazca art from natural soil erosion. What the expanded catalog revealed goes beyond the count. The new figures are mostly small, road-adjacent and deeply personal in subject: relief-type geoglyphs depict mainly human motifs or motifs of things modified by humans, domesticated animals and decapitated heads, typically located within viewing distance of ancient trails crisscrossing the Nazca Pampa. The giant animals visible only from altitude were for the gods. These smaller figures, as one researcher put it, "were made by humans for humans," scenes from everyday life, while the massive Nazca-period figures were "made on mostly flat surfaces to be seen by their gods."
With a research permit extending through 2026, the team is now moving into the final unmapped stretches of the Pampa. After a century of searching, the most significant discoveries are likely still ahead.
