A Sea Worm Built Metal Jaws Without Any Metal
There is a marine bristle worm, Perinereis cultrifera, whose jaws are barely a tenth of an inch long and perform, under testing, like copper or silver. The worm has no metalworking equipment. It grew those jaws from protein.
Those jaws are not bone or shell. They are built from structural proteins threaded with metal ions, which are metal atoms carrying an electrical charge, and that combination has earned them a name now spreading through materials science: bio-metals. A true bio-metal has three defining qualities: it is extremely hard, it grows stiffer or more flexible depending on the scale at which it is measured and its metal ions are woven into the protein in a way that cannot be separated out.
Researchers from TU Wien and the University of Vienna tested the jaws by pressing microscopic probes into cross-sections of the material to measure resistance to denting. The results confirmed that metal ions are more concentrated at the jaw tips than in the central regions, a distribution that makes the tips especially hard for biting and crushing prey. More surprising was a hardness pattern that changes depending on the size of the area being tested, a mechanical signature that had previously appeared only in manufactured metals. Bio-metals also change in stiffness at different scales, something pure metals do not do.
Every metal tool we make starts with heat. The worm skips that step entirely, building something just as hard in cold seawater. Materials scientists want to know how, because the answer could teach us to build stronger materials without a furnace. The chemistry dates back roughly half a billion years. Nature has had considerable time to refine it.

Hot Take: The natural question is why these materials went so long without their own category name. The answer is probably that "metal-like biomaterial" was good enough for everyone who was not planning to build something out of it. Engineers are paying attention now; the naming will catch up.
