A Photon Survived a 2-Billion-Light-Year Cosmic Gauntlet
A single particle of light crossed more than 2 billion light-years of space and arrived here anyway, even though the rules that have governed physics since Einstein say it should have been destroyed along the way. It came from the BOAT, the Brightest Of All Time, the most powerful gamma-ray explosion ever recorded.
The BOAT detonated in 2022. Among the flood of photons it sent outward was one carrying more energy than any photon ever detected from a gamma-ray burst, picked up by a cosmic-ray detector in Russia's Caucasus. Space is not empty. It is saturated with faint radiation left over from the Big Bang, a fossil light field filling the entire universe. A photon this energetic, traveling this far, should have collided with that background and been converted into something else. Until now, that prediction has held reliably.
The photon arrived anyway, one hour late relative to the burst's lower-energy photons, exactly what one proposed explanation predicts.
That explanation combines a hypothetical particle that slips through the universe more easily than a photon with the possibility that, at extreme energies, one of the core rules of Einstein's 1905 theory of special relativity bends slightly. This isn't proof Einstein was wrong. It is evidence the universe has reached an energy level where his rules may need adjusting, one no machine on Earth can reach to test directly.
We can't build an experiment powerful enough. The universe apparently can.
