A 6-Month-Old Neanderthal Already Had the Body of a Toddler

Neanderthal bones grew on one schedule and their teeth on another. Scientists have a guess as to why.

A skeleton pulled from an Israeli cave belongs to a Neanderthal infant known as Amud 7, dead at roughly 6 months old, with a body and brain already the size of a modern human 1-year-old. Built like a toddler. The teeth say infant. The limbs say something else entirely.

The remains date to about 51,000 to 56,000 years ago and include more than 100 bone fragments from the skull, arms, legs and torso. The lengths of the arms and legs match those of a modern human child between 12 and 14 months, with the upper limbs aligning with about 13.7 months. The teeth, meanwhile, clocked the same child at roughly 5.5 to 6 months.

That gap is the finding. In modern humans, teeth and body growth tend to track together during infancy. In Amud 7, the body grew at a faster pace than the teeth. Researchers identified three distinct growth stages in juvenile Neanderthals: newborns whose teeth and bodies developed in sync, then a massive surge in body and brain growth that outpaced dental development, and later a period where both tracks re-aligned while brain growth continued fast.

The leading explanation is that environmental pressures from living in colder Eurasian climates drove faster early growth as a survival strategy, helping Neanderthal young bulk up enough to survive the cold. A reasonable hypothesis. What it doesn't fully answer is why the developmental clock ran on two separate tracks at once.

The child had been placed in a niche in the cave wall, with a red deer jaw resting above the remains, a detail often linked to burial behavior. However differently Neanderthal children developed, this one was laid to rest with care.
