A $20 Fish Tank Helped Grow the First Human Lung Outside a Body
A broke medical student walked into a Galveston pet store around 2010, looked at a three-and-a-half-gallon aquarium, and thought: that's a thoracic cavity. He bought it for $20 and built what he'd later describe as the world's first large lung bioreactor, a chamber for growing living lungs outside the human body.
That fish tank, and the chain of work it set in motion, eventually led to what researchers are calling the first human lung grown in a laboratory.
Here's how it works. The process starts with a lung no longer viable for transplant. Every one of its original cells gets stripped away, leaving only the underlying protein scaffolding that gave the organ its shape in the first place, bleached white and empty. Then they seed that scaffold with cells from the intended recipient, trying to transform an organ bound for medical waste into a personalized replacement.
The significance isn't just symbolic. Conventional transplants require lifelong immunosuppression because a donor organ is, biologically speaking, a foreign object. Rebuilding an organ from the recipient's own cells could sidestep that problem entirely. Researchers on the project say a safe treatment depends on the cells coming from the patient who will receive the organ, not from a donor.
The caveats are real and the researchers say so clearly. A transplant-ready lung is still a distant target. The team has to figure out how to produce patient cells in bulk, get them to populate the entire organ rather than patches of it, prove the rebuilt lung can actually exchange oxygen, and scale the whole process beyond a single lab bench.
The fish tank has since been sold to a lab equipment company and commercialized. The lung is still a work in progress.
