2.64 Billion Years in the Dark, and It Tastes Like Regret
Nearly 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) beneath a copper mine in Timmins, Ontario, geologists cracked open a fracture in the rock and found water that had been sitting there, completely undisturbed, for up to 2.64 billion years. That's older than every animal, plant and complex cell that has ever lived. When that water last touched the surface, Earth had no oxygen in its atmosphere and nothing alive more complicated than a single-celled organism.
Scientists confirmed the age using noble gases, including xenon and helium, trapped inside like a chemical timestamp. Because noble gases don't react with anything, their isotope ratios preserve a precise record of the atmospheric conditions present when the water was first sealed in. The fingerprint matched gases from the surrounding rocks as they were forming, 2.6 billion years ago.
Here's where it gets stranger: the water isn't dead. It contains the chemical ingredients to support microbial life, hydrogen and methane among them, which means something may have been living in total darkness, cut off from the surface, for geological epochs. That has obvious implications for places like Mars, where similar sealed subsurface environments might exist.
Now, about the myth. A story has circulated that the geologist who found this water drank it. She did not. Barbara Sherwood Lollar of the University of Toronto told IFLScience the story is a media invention that never happened. What she can confirm is getting splashed by the flowing water, enough to register its taste directly: intensely bitter and several times saltier than seawater.
The water has been in isolation since before multicellular life existed. The least it deserves is a little dignity.
