# When Both Ears Point the Same Direction, the Bat Wins

A bat closing in on a moth in total darkness is one of the more elegant engineering problems nature has ever solved. And it turns out the solution involves breaking one of our most basic assumptions about how ears work.

The standard model went like this: echolocating bats spread their outer ears in opposite directions to maximize the volume difference between what each ear picks up. The brain reads that gap, and the bat knows where the sound is coming from. It's essentially how our own hearing works.

New research using a wind tunnel and high-speed 3D camera tracking found the opposite. Freely flying bats on a hunting approach point both ears straight at their prey, not apart. That collapses exactly the volume difference between the ears they were thought to depend on. What they appear to gain instead: longer detection range and less acoustic clutter from everything that isn't the moth. Range and clarity over positional precision, at the most critical moment of the hunt.

The trade-off is real. How bats maintain directional accuracy once they've given up the ear-spread cue isn't settled. The paper offers hypotheses. The question stays open.

Evolution, once again, ignored the textbook.
