# The Water Inside Blood Falls Isn't Supposed to Have Ocean Life in It

A waterfall in Antarctica bleeds red into a frozen lake. That part was already strange. Now scientists have found that the water seeping through the ice carries living descendants of a marine community sealed beneath the glacier since before modern humans existed.

Blood Falls sits at the edge of Taylor Glacier in Antarctica's McMurdo Dry Valleys. The crimson color comes from iron-rich brine: the iron stays invisible while sealed beneath the ice, but oxidizes fast once it reaches oxygen at the surface, turning the outflow a deep rusty red. Scientists have known the water is salty for years. The question was why.

The answer, it turns out, is that the ocean got there first. Prior geochemical studies suggested the brine likely originated when seawater inundated Taylor Valley during past warm periods, becoming isolated beneath Taylor Glacier as sea levels fell. The new research goes further: the results suggest Blood Falls may preserve the descendants of a marine community trapped beneath the glacier when ancient seawater flooded the valley long ago, surviving as Antarctica transformed from a much warmer landscape.

The biological case is what makes this land. The study found not just bacteria in the brine but complex eukaryotes: diatoms, dinoflagellates and ciliates. The marine eukaryotes were concentrated around Blood Falls rather than scattered across the Dry Valleys, and many differed genetically from their modern marine relatives in ways consistent with long isolation. Some researchers have argued the marine signatures arrived via intense coastal winds. This study makes that harder to defend.

The microbial community has been sealed beneath ice for over a million years, yet persisted all this time. It's a pocket of the ancient ocean, frozen in place, still alive. Still leaking.
