# Mescaline Threw a Brain Party. The Cerebellum Crashed It.

Humans have been taking mescaline for 5,700 years. Neuroscience has been paying attention for approximately the last five minutes.

Mescaline is a naturally occurring compound found primarily in peyote cacti in the American Southwest and Mexico. Archaeological evidence puts its use at 5,700 years, making it one of the oldest hallucinogens on record. It gave the entire category of psychedelics its name. And until now, researchers had remarkably little idea what it was actually doing inside the brain.

Mescaline produces the same hallmark effects as LSD and psilocybin: visual distortions, altered perception, changes in cognition. But brain scans suggest it gets there differently, and that difference is the story.

The scans revealed an unusual pattern: mescaline reduced activity within parts of the cerebellum while simultaneously strengthening communication between the cerebellum and other brain regions. The strongest connectivity increases ran between the cerebellum's deep nuclei and the hippocampus, thalamus, somatosensory cortex and midbrain. The cerebellum is traditionally understood as the brain's movement coordinator. It is not where anyone expected the action to be.

Researcher Noah Cavallaro explained that comparing compounds that produce similar hallucinogenic effects through different neural pathways could help researchers isolate which brain changes are actually driving which specific experiences. The research also raises a stranger possibility: a cactus compound used in ceremony since prehistoric times might help explain certain psychiatric conditions involving disordered sensory perception.

Five thousand seven hundred years of use, and the cerebellum never came up once.
