# The Hiroshima Fireball Left Behind a Metal That Had Never Existed Before

Eighty years on, the sand at Hiroshima Bay is still giving up its secrets. Lodged inside a microscopic glass droplet no larger than a grain of salt, researchers have found an alloy that has never been observed anywhere, not in nature, not in any laboratory, not in any materials catalog ever assembled.

When the bomb detonated, its plasma cloud vaporized structural steel, aluminum alloys and other industrial metals from the surrounding city. Those elements swirled together before cooling almost instantly as the fireball expanded, freezing the atoms into an arrangement that normal chemistry would never permit. The material has its own name now: hiroshimaite, a previously unknown alloy of iron, chromium, nickel, manganese, molybdenum, silicon and aluminum locked into a unique crystalline structure.

In 2019, retired geologist Mario Wannier found tiny glass particles while combing through beach sands from Hiroshima Bay. The particles turned out to be fallout debris from the blast. Wannier, University of Florence geologist Luca Bindi and colleagues then discovered the new alloy inside one of those particles. The team examined 34 bits of hiroshimaite and found the metallic crystals in one of them. One grain. One.

A nuclear explosion hits its environment like a lightning strike or meteor impact: the air goes surface-of-the-sun hot and then cools in an instant, forcing vaporized metals together before they have time to stabilize. That is how physics produces something entirely new from the ruins of a city.

Hiroshimaite recorded a split second of history. The archive, it turns out, is the rubble.
