# A Dark Road, September 19, 1961: The First Documented Alien Abduction in America

Something was following them through the White Mountains.

On the night of September 19, 1961, Betty and Barney Hill were driving home to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, after a trip to Niagara Falls and Montreal, when a bright light began tracking their car. They pulled over and looked at it through binoculars, then drove on. Only later did they realize something was missing: the four hour drive had taken seven, and neither could account for the extra time.

In the months that followed, Betty had recurring nightmares and Barney developed an ulcer and crushing anxiety. Two years after the encounter, the couple sought help from a Boston psychiatrist who used hypnosis, a mainstream clinical technique at the time. In separate sessions, Betty and Barney each described the same thing: an examination table, humanoid beings, a ramp leading into a craft. Betty later sketched a star map from memory. A schoolteacher and amateur astronomer would go on to match it, imperfectly, to the Zeta Reticuli star system.

The Hills were also an interracial couple and civil rights activists in a New Hampshire that offered them little institutional support at the time, a detail that adds real weight to why two credible, cautious people chose to go public with a story this strange.

Their account, publicized nationally by the mid 1960s, is recognized today as the first widely documented alien abduction case in American history. The vocabulary it introduced, missing time, memory recovered under hypnosis, an unexplained physical examination, has shown up in nearly every abduction account reported since.

Sixty five years later, nobody has fully explained what happened on that road that night. The case remains open, not because it was ever solved, but because it never stopped being the reference point for how these stories get told.
