At 4 a.m. on March 24, 1973, a woman named Ann Gardner reported a brilliantly lit object hovering over the United Nuclear plant in Wood River Junction, Rhode Island, a facility that recovered highly enriched uranium from scrap. According to APRO, a civilian UFO organization, it hung there for five or six minutes before moving west. Three nights later, she reported another bright object circling low over the same plant, blinking red.

Nine years earlier, the plant had been the site of a fatal nuclear accident. A worker poured the wrong solution into a tank, set off a flash of light and a lethal burst of radiation, and died two days later. There is no evidence connecting the two events. It is still an unsettling address for a light in the sky.

On April 9, two men near the town's post office reported a silent white object roughly 40 feet (12 meters) across, gliding over the treetops before turning cherry-red and speeding away. Moments later, a twin-engine radar plane passed over the trees in the same direction. The next night, a driver on U.S. Route 1 said her lights and ignition faltered as an orange-red object passed overhead. NICAP, another civilian group, reported that more than 250 people saw the object that spring, including Providence Evening Bulletin reporter Thomas Gariepy, and that witnesses described what looked like military aircraft searching the area afterward.

Later retellings add stalled engines, televisions dissolving into static and sightings lasting for years. The 1973 reports don't go that far. Several of the most striking, including both over the plant, came from one witness, and the Coast Guard identified one sighting as an ordinary aircraft.

One strange light over a uranium plant is easy to file away. A whole region's worth of them is harder.

**Hot Take:** Two men watched a glowing object pass over the trees, then watched a radar plane follow the same line through the sky. Only one of those should have left paperwork.
