# One Galaxy Has Three Supermassive Black Holes, Two of Them on a Collision Course

Light left galaxy J0148-4214 over 12.5 billion years ago, when the universe was barely a toddler. When it finally arrived at James Webb's mirrors, it carried a secret nobody expected: three supermassive black holes, all of them active, all of them feeding, crammed into a single galaxy.

The two central black holes sit just 620 light-years apart, while the third hangs about 5,500 light-years out from the center, close enough, cosmically speaking, to feel like a plot twist. Their masses clock in at roughly 80 million, two million and 0.6 million times the mass of our sun. All told, the host galaxy weighs in at around 1.3 billion solar masses — and a striking share of that bulk is tied up in the black holes themselves. The gravitational math here is not subtle.

Those two central black holes are on a collision course and expected to merge within the next few hundred million years. As for the third: astronomers have two scenarios. It could someday merge with the central pair, or it could have already been ejected during a previous black hole merger. Either way, it's out there, it's feeding, and it got there somehow.

Researchers suggest black hole merging may be an additional, fast route for rapid growth in the early universe, which would help explain one of cosmology's more irritating open questions: how supermassive black holes got so massive so quickly after the Big Bang. Three in one galaxy, 1.2 billion years post-Big Bang, isn't an answer. It's a direction.

The universe has been playing three-card monte with its black holes, and Webb just caught a hand.
