# Mammals Have One Antibody System. Bats Didn't Get the Memo.

Bats carry Ebola. They carry coronaviruses, henipaviruses and a roster of pathogens that would put most mammals in the ground. The bats are fine. Scientists have been trying to figure out why for decades, and a new Tulane University study published in *Science Advances* just found something that has genuinely never been seen before in any mammal.

Vesper bats, the world's largest bat family, turned out to carry two separate systems of genes for building antibodies, the proteins immune systems use to recognize and fight infection. Every other known mammal, and every bird, reptile and frog researchers checked, has only one. That's not a small difference. That's a different immune architecture, tucked inside a creature that hangs upside down in your attic.

One arm of that duplicated system appears built for generalist antibodies that cover a wide range of threats. The other looks tuned for narrower, pathogen-specific targeting, a broad net and a scalpel operating side by side. The rest of us only got one tool.

Vesper bats span more than 500 species across every continent except Antarctica, which means this immune upgrade isn't a niche quirk. It's widespread, ancient and apparently very good at its job.

Researchers are careful to note this isn't the complete answer. Understanding how bats coexist with these viruses without becoming ill could sharpen our understanding of immune responses across species and inform strategies for reducing disease spillover risk. The mystery isn't closed; it just got a lot more interesting.

The bats have had two immune systems this whole time. They were not bragging about it.
