Inside a bacterial cell, a virus faces a choice: kill the host now, or slip into its genome and wait for better conditions. Bacteriophages don't make that call alone. They communicate, using small peptide molecules that accumulate as infection spreads and tip the collective decision toward dormancy. This collective decision-making was thought to be strictly internal. Each species votes only in its own election.

A study just published in *Cell* breaks that model. Phages from different species — including phages that infect entirely different bacteria — can send and receive each other's signals. The peptide molecules that carry these decisions aren't species-locked. With the right molecular shape, a signal from one phage lineage crosses over and changes the behavior of another, pushing it toward dormancy it wouldn't have chosen on its own.

The researchers, from IBV-CSIC Valencia and Imperial College London, found the mechanism runs on structural specificity: conserved features in the receptor proteins govern which signals can cross the species line. A single amino acid change opens or closes the channel. What it means for how bacterial communities survive and collapse, the paper leaves open.

The election, it turns out, is open to write-in candidates.
