# Britain Turned a Scottish Island Into an Anthrax Bomb Range. It Stayed Contaminated for 48 Years.

In 1942, Winston Churchill sent scientists from the Porton Down research facility to test a biological weapon on a remote island in the Scottish Highlands. He feared the Nazis were building one first.

The Ministry of Defence chose Gruinard Island: uninhabited, but only a short boat ride from the mainland. Locals were told nothing. Scientists tethered sheep there, detonated mortar bombs packed with anthrax spores, and confirmed the weapon worked.

*Bacillus anthracis* forms spores when it senses starvation, and those spores can survive heat, cold, radiation and chemical disinfectants for centuries. No one fully grasped that in 1942\. A year later, a dead sheep drifted to the mainland and killed livestock there. The government quietly compensated farmers without disclosing why.

The island stayed quarantined and classified for nearly four decades. In 1981, a group calling itself the Dark Harvest Commandos decided diplomacy was over. They claimed to have removed 300 lbs (140 kg) of contaminated soil from the island, leaving one container outside the Chemical Defence Establishment at Porton Down. A second container went to Blackpool, where the Conservative Party was holding its annual conference.

The government finally acted. Crews soaked the worst zones in 280 tonnes of formaldehyde mixed with seawater and stripped away the most contaminated topsoil. By 1990, officials declared Gruinard anthrax-free and removed the warning signs. The island is open to visitors, and its bay draws kayakers.

Nothing about it looks dangerous from the water.
