- Description: Something may have exploded on our cosmic doorstep and sent exactly one messenger. Everything else that should have escaped never showed up. So where did it go?

In February 2023, a single neutrino slammed into an underwater detector off Sicily carrying roughly 35 times the energy of any neutrino ever recorded. A paper in Physical Review D suggests it may be the last gasp of a minuscule black hole hiding in a dimension nobody can see.

The particle's power was startling. Its solitude was stranger. A dying black hole should also release light, and no other instrument caught any.

In 2025, MIT physicists Alexandra Klipfel and David Kaiser proposed that an ancient, primordial black hole, a hypothetical relic of the universe's first moments, could have burst within 2,000 Earth-sun distances of us and produced the neutrino. That paper, published Sept. 28, pushes further. In a highly speculative scenario, the black hole formed around cosmic strings, theorized cracks in spacetime, then sat tucked within a fifth dimension curled up about 1 micron (1/25,000 of an inch) wide at every point in space. From there, says co-author Dieter Lüst of the Max Planck Institute for Physics, neutrinos alone could leak out to our universe.

Other physicists are wary. Dan Hooper, a University of Wisconsin-Madison cosmologist, points out that nobody knows a fifth dimension exists. Ignacio Taboada of the Georgia Institute of Technology prefers a plainer culprit: cosmic rays smacking into matter across the cosmos.

There's another puzzle. IceCube, a far larger detector in Antarctica, saw nothing that day and has never logged a neutrino that energetic. A nearby black hole could explain it by aiming at KM3NeT, the Sicilian detector, and missing IceCube.

If the idea holds, a black hole blew up in our cosmic neighborhood like a party next door, and the only thing that came through the wall was the bass.

**Hot Take:** One neutrino is hauling a black hole, cosmic strings and a fifth dimension. Most overpacked carry-on in physics history, and it still cleared the gate.
