# A Gamma-Ray Signal Looks Like Dark Matter Until the Milky Way Enters the Picture

A narrow gamma-ray signal has appeared in three massive galaxy clusters. Awkwardly, it looks a lot like something physicists have predicted dark matter might produce.

Researchers examined 15.5 years of observations from NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, studying 13 nearby galaxy clusters. In Virgo, Fornax and Ophiuchus, they found an excess of photons concentrated at roughly 43.2 gigaelectronvolts.

The number matters less than the concentration. Most known astrophysical processes produce gamma rays across a range of energies. A sharp line at one specific energy is unusual, and some hypothetical dark matter particles could produce exactly such a feature when they annihilate or decay.

Galaxy clusters are also promising places to look. Their visible matter cannot account for all of their gravity, so current models put enormous amounts of dark matter inside them.

Then the Milky Way ruins the neat explanation.

If ordinary dark matter annihilation produces the 43.2 GeV line, researchers should also see it toward the dark matter-rich inner Milky Way. They don't.

That absence makes a simple instrument problem less likely, since Fermi presumably would not misbehave only when pointed at particular galaxy clusters. Unfortunately, it also weakens the simplest dark matter explanation.

The remaining possibilities include more complicated dark matter physics, an unidentified astrophysical process or something no one has proposed yet.

**Hot Take:** There is a particular cruelty in getting almost exactly the signal theorists wanted, then finding it missing from the obvious comparison. One suspects the universe has refereed papers before.
