# A Cooler Earth Core Could Answer 3.5-Billion-Year-Old Magnetic Question

Scientists have spent decades trying to explain how Earth kept its magnetic field running for billions of years before its inner core existed. A new answer just landed, and it comes with a catch: the core might run about 1,000°C (1,800°F) cooler than everyone thought.

Here's the paradox. The field runs today on heat released as the inner core slowly freezes into the liquid metal around it. But that core likely didn't form until roughly half a billion years ago, and the field has run for at least 4 billion. Something powered it for the 3.5 billion years between, with no clean answer for what.

Carnegie geophysicist Zachary Geballe and his team spent five years building a new way to measure it: iron squeezed between diamond tips to nearly 2 million atmospheres, matching Earth's outer core, heated with electrical pulses instead of a laser. Rather than watch for melting, they tracked a pause in temperature, the moment added energy stops heating the metal and starts breaking it apart.

Their sample melted between 4,420 and 5,220 kelvins, more than 1,000°C below most earlier figures. Feed that into models of Earth's cooling history and the paradox mostly resolves: the core alone could have run the dynamo on residual heat before the inner core froze.

Not everyone is convinced. Bernie Wood, an Oxford petrologist not involved in the work, called it an elegant fix but expects pushback from researchers converging on higher numbers for decades. Dario Alfè, whose work established those numbers, called this a "jump back into the past" and said he isn't persuaded without a closer look.

The planet ran its shield for billions of years before anyone could explain how. Doing it cooler than assumed is, if anything, a tidier ending.
