# 100 Million Years Ago, Mites Were Already Better at Group Travel Than Most Hiking Parties

A piece of Burmese amber roughly the size of a fingernail froze a migration in progress. Inside it: a column of larval mites, each about 200 micrometers long, marching in a single-file line. They have been doing exactly that for 100 million years, give or take, because amber does not care about your plans.

The specimen is the earliest known evidence of queuing behavior in terrestrial arthropods, and it preserves something researchers didn't expect: fine silk threads physically linking the legs of adjacent mites, with the silk-producing apparatus itself visible in the fossil. The mites weren't just walking together. They were tethered together, each one connected to the next by a line they produced themselves.

These animals were selectively producing silk and attaching themselves to one another for organized migration 100 million years before anyone thought to study the behavior at all. Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences used laser confocal microscopy to image the structure, the only method with enough resolution to reveal what was actually holding the column together.

Queuing migration is considered one of the most intriguing forms of collective behavior in animals, yet fossil evidence of it in terrestrial arthropods has been essentially absent until now. The previous record belonged to marine animals from hundreds of millions of years earlier. This pushes organized land-based group travel back to the middle of the Cretaceous.

Somewhere in that same amber deposit, more of these columns are probably still marching, waiting for someone with a microscope.
